The Country Gentlemen "Tribute"

.... it is apparently Mike Phipps who provides the stellar vocalizing reminiscent of Charlie Waller’s. .... Yates and Friends succeed in depicting both sound and psyche of the pioneering Country Gentlemen. While some may argue that it’s the original releases that were most pivotal to the genre, it’s also beneficial to revisit that same material with a new updated cast of musicians using contemporary recording technology to recreate a sound from decades before. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Bill Yates and Friends "A Tribute To The Country Gentlemen" is the result of the love of the "Real" Country Gentlemen music and an impromtu jam session. Bill Yates was a member of The Country Gentlemen from 1969-1989. He recored 17 projects with the group, and traveled the world over. He has been given numerous awards for his work with not only the "Gents" but Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin and Red Allen. Bill was attending the "Cabin Fever Picking Party" in Hampton VA in March of 2005 when he ran into Darren Beachley (Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver) and David Propst, the three decided to get into a small jam session and sing some "Country Gentlemen" songs. That night the idea to keep the Country Gentlemen music alive was born. Bill and Darren knew Mike Phipps and knew Mike sounded so much like Charlie Waller and decided to bring him in on the project. Dave Propst, Scott Walker and Dave Macglashen (Shenendoah Blue) would come aboard as well. Bill and the crew would start recording in August of 2005. During the recording Darren called resophonic guitarist Mark Clifton (Cliff Waldron and The New Shades of Grass) and ask him to join. The project was eventually finished and released in December of 2006 on Mastershield Records.
